White Flag

While at Lift they played the main song from Passion 2012 White Flag and at first I wasn't sure how I felt about it. That all changed when I heard the story behind it.
The idea of a white flag means surrender when you are in war. It means that your done, you've given up. Whats great is that the song relates this idea of war and surrender to surrendering to God. There is a spiritual battle that rages on in this world, weather we want to acknowledge it or not. Daily we see the things that God is doing. My devotion yesterday touched upon this, the idea that sometimes we see a lot of monotony in our lives but God makes the same things happen everyday, the sun rise, birds sing and we awake to all of it. We don't need  to believe there is a battle for our souls for it to be happening.
This song is one that reminds me that we have to daily give our life to God because its not ours. We don't own our live. We can never win the fight for our souls on our own, we need to surrender to God. We need to lay it all down for God.
Another interesting thing about this song is how it came about. While preparing for Passion 2012 Chris Tomlin and many other songwriters when on a retreat for writing songs for Passion. While in another part of the world Louie Giglio and the Passion team were beginning to prepare for Passion. As they were preparing someone on the team came up with the idea of sticking with only one cause for the entire year and that ended up being Human Trafficking. Then this idea of having flags up to represent the 27 million people who were enslaved. While on the other end of the world (I am pretty sure it was the other end of the world but it makes for a good version of this story)  the songwriters were reading Romans 12: 1-5 which in turned lead them to the first verse. "The battle rages on" comes from this idea that we are not to be conformed to this world but give everything to God. When Chris presented the song to Louie it confirmed everything that God was planning for them, through them. God was working on both groups at the same time.

The rest is how shall we say...history!

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfectFor by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
(Romans 12:1-5 ESV)

White Flag
Verse 1
The battle rages on
As storm and tempest roar
We cannot win this fight
Inside our rebel hearts
We're laying down our weapons now
Chorus

We raise our white flag
We surrender
All to You
All for You
We raise our white flag
The war is over
Love has come
Your love has won
Verse 2

Here on this holy ground
You made a way for peace
Laying Your body down
You took our rightful place
This freedom song is marching on
Bridge

We lift the cross
Lift it high, lift it high
